Makrinitsa: A Journey to the ‘Balcony of Pelion’ with Its Picturesque Kaldherimia and Stone Manors

in

One of the most beautiful villages in the region, known for its unique architectural landscape and breathtaking natural surroundings, is Makrinitsa. Nestled on the western slopes of Mount Pelion, it is located 17 km from Volos and is famous for its stunning view of the Thessalian city and Pagasetic Gulf, earning it the nickname ‘the balcony of Pelion.’ This settlement is an ideal family getaway destination, offering traditional Pelion architecture, relaxation, and delicious food year-round.

The houses here are two or three stories tall, featuring thick stone walls, stone roofs, and richly decorated wooden carvings on their upper floors—hallmarks of Ottoman-period architecture. The Topali Manor, built in 1844, stands as a representative example of local architecture and now serves as the Museum of Folk Art and History of Pelion, housing over 1500 exhibits showcasing daily life.

In the central square lies the Byzantine Museum of Makrinitsa ‘Oxeia Episkepsi,’ hosting relics from the 13th to the 20th century. It also offers educational programs for schools and institutions. Another notable landmark is the café ‘Theophilos,’ adorned with a painting by the renowned artist Theophilos Hatzi Michael, declared an ‘historic preserved monument.’

Makrinitsa’s history dates back to the early 13th century when Constantine Maliasenos founded the monastery of Panagia Oxia Episkepsi, around which the village grew. The town prospered during the 18th century due to trade and weaving, becoming the largest and most populous community in the area by the early 19th century.

Makrinitsa played a significant role in the Greek War of Independence in 1821 and led the Thessaly uprising in 1878. Today, Makrinitsa continues to thrive as a tourist destination, offering visitors a taste of traditional cuisine such as spetzofai, fava bean stew, giant beans baked in the oven, and various pies made with homemade phyllo dough. Located approximately 350 km from Athens, it takes about four hours to reach by car.
