Strong reactions have emerged following the violent attack on Makis Voridis at a restaurant in Heraklion, Crete, on Saturday night (26.10.2025), where he was dining with his family and friends. Voridis had traveled to Heraklion ahead of 28 October celebrations when approximately 50 hooded individuals launched an assault, throwing eggs, chairs, wood, stones, and tables while shouting slogans. The aftermath footage reveals a devastating scene: broken furniture, shattered tables, and the exterior of the establishment resembling a battlefield, captured after Voridis and his family fled to escape the attackers.
“I saw bottles, chairs, and objects being thrown, resulting in minor injuries to one or two people,” said an eyewitness.
In a social media post, Voridis condemned the unprovoked attack, blaming “left-wing hooligans” and asserting that such incidents do not intimidate him. He emphasized that the perpetrators showed no respect for his family, including his 12-year-old daughter who witnessed the assault. “Radical left-wing hooligans attacked me unprovoked at a restaurant in Heraklion, Crete, where I was on a private visit. I know them, and their despicable tactics neither surprise nor frighten me! I’ve lived like this my entire life. But they showed no respect for my family — my 12-year-old daughter was there — or for other children dining nearby who weren’t even with us. Unfortunately, we still have a long way to go to eradicate far-left violence,” stated the New Democracy MP.
Political figures across the spectrum, including from New Democracy and other parliamentary parties, swiftly condemned the attack. Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis denounced the incident, stating: “The attack last night against ND MP Makis Voridis and his family in Heraklion by a group of ‘known-unknowns’ confirms that, unfortunately, there are a few in Greece who ignore the word ‘respect’ — especially what democracy truly means. These individuals must understand that such actions only strengthen democracies. We live in the country that gave birth to true democracy. We will defend it by all means. We are not afraid. We are many; they are few. No to violence.”
