Makis Voridis: Illegal Immigrants Must Realize They Are Not Welcome Here

The new Minister of Migration and Asylum, Makis Voridis, who recently withdrew a directive extending the deadline for issuing new types of residence permits to immigrants, spoke about undocumented individuals. In an interview with SKAI TV, Voridis explained that: “The conversation is opening today in Europe—and has changed thanks to Kyriakos Mitsotakis—as we now focus on securing our borders. Previously, the Tasias (Chr. Ch.) doctrine prevailed where everyone was treated equally; now, it’s changing again as Europe drafts agreements on migration and asylum and discusses returns.” He emphasized that voluntary and mandatory returns are essential, with mandatory ones being more effective due to limited cooperation from host countries. “We must create a framework that encourages voluntary departures while implementing restrictive measures so illegal immigrants understand they are not welcome here,” Voridis stated. Additionally, he addressed the preliminary investigation concerning Triantopoulos, criticizing the opposition’s stance and highlighting the unprecedented nature of Triantopoulos’ actions.
