A major wildfire broke out late Saturday evening, July 4, 2026, in the Oreokastro area on the outskirts of Thessaloniki, triggering a renewed emergency response. The blaze is spreading uncontrollably, with flames approaching the Filothei area.
Evacuations Underway
As the fire intensified, strong firefighting forces were deployed to the site. Emergency authorities immediately activated evacuation procedures for Anthoupoli, a residential neighborhood in Oreokastro. A public alert issued by Greece’s national emergency number 112 instructed residents: “If you are in Anthoupoli Oreokastro, within the Thessaloniki Regional Unit, evacuate toward TITAN.”
The Saint Panteleimon Foundation for Chronic Illnesses — a care facility located in the area — was also evacuated preventively amid the escalating threat.
Firefighting Efforts and Challenges
According to the Hellenic Fire Service, the fire began around 8:30 p.m. A total of 40 firefighters, 20 vehicles, and one aircraft were mobilized. Water tankers from the Region of Central Macedonia also joined operations. Aerial water drops continued until nightfall, but efforts have been significantly hampered by strong winds sweeping across the region.
ERT reported that the fire is advancing near homes and businesses, with initial reports indicating damaged or destroyed structures and even explosions heard at the scene.
Investigation Launched
The Thessaloniki Arson Investigation Unit has deployed to the area to determine the cause of the fire.
Local Authorities Issue Warnings
In an urgent announcement, the Municipality of Pavlos Melas urged residents to follow official instructions and advised inhabitants of the Evkarpeia community — which borders the affected zone — to avoid unnecessary travel and keep windows closed due to heavy smoke.
The dense black plume from the Oreokastro fire is visible from central Thessaloniki. The massive smoke cloud has blanketed much of the sky, while the acrid smell of burning vegetation and structures has reached numerous parts of the city. Strong local winds are carrying both the smoke and odor far beyond the fire’s origin point — making the impact felt even in districts distant from Oreokastro.
