Christian Brückner, the main suspect in the 2007 disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann — who vanished from a holiday resort in Praia da Luz, Portugal, and has never been found — was arrested following a physical altercation with police outside a supermarket in Kiel, Germany.
Clash Leads to Officer Injury
The incident occurred on 6 June in Kiel and left one officer injured in the knee. According to German news magazine Der Spiegel, the confrontation began when Brückner refused to hand over his mobile phone after officers noticed he was photographing them from a distance.
“During the police intervention, there was physical assault or resistance against law enforcement,” a police spokesperson said.
Notably, the officers involved were not part of Brückner’s dedicated surveillance team — they happened to be at the location and intervened upon spotting his actions.
Defense Claims Overreaction
Brückner’s lawyer, Philipp Markwort, confirmed the incident but argued that the police response was disproportionate. He stated the photo was taken from more than 40 metres away and posed no threat, adding: “This amounts to the persecution of an innocent man.”
Brückner — a convicted sex offender with multiple prior convictions for sexual crimes, drug trafficking, theft, and assault — had been under 24-hour police surveillance since his release from prison on 17 September 2025. He served a seven-year sentence in Germany for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Portugal.
Surveillance Under Legal Review
His round-the-clock monitoring was recently ruled unnecessary by a court, citing insufficient grounds for continued restriction. However, authorities have appealed the decision, meaning the surveillance remains in effect pending final judicial review.
Even if the appeal fails, Brückner is expected to continue wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet. His surveillance had aimed both to protect the public and to shield him from potential vigilante attacks.
He has never faced formal charges in connection with Madeleine McCann’s disappearance, due to lack of sufficient evidence. Earlier this year, he was also investigated by Kiel police in connection with an April altercation involving a British national.
