Macron Insists: Ukraine, Not Russia, Will Decide on Peacekeeping Forces

The deployment of peacekeeping forces in Ukraine, as proposed by the UK and France within a possible ceasefire agreement with Russia, is a decision that will be made by Kyiv, not Moscow, French President Macron stated in an interview with local French newspapers. Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer are promoting the idea of coordinated military support for Ukraine. Starmer organized a virtual conference on Saturday with Macron and several other allies of Ukraine, excluding the USA. “Ukraine is a sovereign nation. If it requests allied forces to be stationed on its territory, this is not something that depends on Russia’s approval,” said Macron in the interview, which was released late Saturday night (15.3.25). Russia has repeatedly rejected the idea of NATO member soldiers being stationed in Ukraine. Macron mentioned that a potential peacekeeping force could consist of ‘several thousand soldiers’ from each country. Several European and non-European countries have expressed interest in participating. However, like other aspects of a possible ceasefire, the form this peacekeeping force would take remains unclear. The UK and France say they could send peacekeeping forces to Ukraine, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also stated that his country is open to this possibility.
