Speaking alongside Syrian President Ahmed al-Sarra at a joint press conference following their talks at the Presidential Palace, Macron stated: “France is a reliable and stable partner for Syria and has always supported the interests of the Syrian people.” He added that France aims to continue working on rebuilding Syria’s banking sector and is assisting the Central Bank of Syria.
A Strategic Partnership Amid Geopolitical Shifts
President al-Sarra welcomed Macron’s engagement, expressing Syria’s desire for France to become its “first partner” as the country reasserts its strategic position as a “crossroads of global corridors”—a role underscored by recent disruptions to maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking at the opening of an economic forum held at the Presidential Palace in Damascus alongside Macron, al-Sarra emphasized how the current crisis has reaffirmed “the importance of Syria’s geographic location, which is regaining a vital role as a crossroads of global corridors.” He reiterated: “And along this route, we want France to be our first partner.”
Security Incident Near Macron’s Hotel
Earlier the same day—July 7, 2026—a security alert was triggered in Damascus after explosions occurred near the Four Seasons Hotel, where French President Macron was reportedly staying, according to Syrian state media. At least 18 people were injured, including four police officers, Syrian state outlets reported. At the time of the blasts, Macron had already entered the Presidential Palace for his meeting with President al-Sarra. Syrian authorities have not issued an official statement on the incident.
