Macron Calls for Meeting of European Military Chiefs in Paris

French President Emmanuel Macron announced in a televised address that he intends to convene a meeting of all European military chiefs in Paris next week. Macron also urged the French people to be prepared for any eventuality due to the crisis in Ukraine, signaling a significant increase in defense spending in France and the initiation of a European dialogue regarding the potential use of France’s nuclear arsenal. However, he emphasized that the final decision on this matter will always rest with the President of France. Macron noted that following the shift in U.S. policy towards Ukraine, ‘the world is becoming more violent, and terrorist threats are not receding,’ highlighting the ongoing Russian threat. He stressed that both France and Europe must make their own decisions. ‘The path to achieving a peaceful resolution of the Ukrainian issue does not involve abandoning or negotiating away Ukraine,’ Macron stated, emphasizing that Russia’s words cannot be trusted. Next week, military leaders from countries willing to support Ukraine will meet in Paris, according to Macron, who expressed his desire for the U.S. to remain alongside Europe. He underlined that Europe must also prepare for the opposite scenario, stating, ‘We must be ready and arm ourselves to face any situation if we want peace.’ Macron also mentioned that tomorrow in Brussels, critical decisions about European defense will be adopted, including the exclusion of defense expenditures from European fiscal rules. The goal is to industrialize Europe by focusing on the defense industry. Finally, Macron criticized the U.S. decision to increase tariffs, indicating that Europe will provide necessary responses.
