Lukashenko: Due to Trump, Ending the War in Ukraine Has Become Urgent

In glowing terms, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko praised Donald Trump and his political initiatives aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. During an interview published on March 5, 2025, Lukashenko emphasized that both Russia and Belarus benefit from Trump’s stance toward NATO and the European Union. Speaking with online personality Mario Naufal on Elon Musk’s platform X, Lukashenko extolled the U.S. president and his approach not only regarding the war in Ukraine but also concerning how he handles relations with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Brussels. ‘Only thanks to this administration has the issue of ending the war become so urgent,’ said Lukashenko, who extended his 31-year rule following presidential elections in January—a move rejected by Western governments as illegitimate. ‘We benefit because Trump put Zelenskyy in his place; they should know that,’ he continued. The war in Ukraine has drawn Lukashenko closer to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who invaded Ukraine partly using Belarusian territory. Since then, Putin has deployed tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. Lukashenko stated that Trump’s sole aim is to end wars, describing it as an ‘extremely wise’ foreign policy. ‘I’m ready to stand by him and do whatever is necessary to end the war and improve people’s lives,’ he commented. The EU and the U.S. have imposed multiple sanctions on Belarus in response to human rights violations and crackdown operations since the 2020 presidential elections and its involvement in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Lukashenko believes the recent rift between the U.S. and the EU serves Minsk’s interests. ‘Let’s be honest, it benefits me; it’s useful for us that the U.S. disagrees with the EU,’ he remarked without elaborating.
