Greeks absorbing the news they’re going to the polls again — for a second time in two years. Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis has called a snap election. He’s seeking a fresh mandate to rule so he can deal with the economic crisis. [Costas Karamanlis, Greek Prime Minister]: “With faith and a sense of responsibility, we will battle together. Citizens will trust us to take the country out of the financial crisis. I ask for a popular mandate so that with the right program we will face the difficult international situation.” Some of the country’s media have criticized his decision. “I Failed but Vote for Me Again!” reads one headline, “Elections in the Middle of an Economic Crisis” says another. But the opposition socialist party leader is delighted. [George Papandreou, Socialist Pasok Party Leader]: “Now is the time to go forward. Greece cannot wait. I call to you to work together, to participate in a great national effort, a new unity that will unify Greeks for the future.” Greeks share many concerns including high unemployment, an inadequate health and education system, and widespread corruption. The popular support which brought the government into power has dwindled over economic reforms, violent riots last December and the government’s response to recent forest fires around Athens.
