“As one of the surgeons involved in the effort to save the patient, I feel compelled to state that for many hours, every possible effort—marked by self-sacrifice and anguish—was made to keep the 35-year-old mother alive,” said Konstantinos Pliakostamos, Director of the Surgical Clinic at Livadeia General Hospital.

A Tragic Outcome Following Emergency Hysterectomy

The sworn administrative investigation into the case of 35-year-old Viosiana—a patient who died just over 24 hours after childbirth at Livadeia Hospital—is now fully underway. In a rare public statement, Dr. Pliakostamos broke his silence on the matter via a Facebook post, offering a detailed clinical account of the events.

Viosiana underwent a scheduled cesarean section on the morning of Wednesday, 24 June 2026. The surgery concluded as planned, with no apparent intraoperative complications. However, shortly after delivery—and while she remained in the operating room—the new mother suddenly developed an unusually severe vaginal hemorrhage.

Initially, the bleeding was attributed to inadequate uterine response to standard uterotonic medications already administered per protocol. As the hemorrhage worsened and became life-threatening, additional uterotonics and hemostatic agents were given, alongside massive transfusion of cross-matched packed red blood cells and blood derivatives.

Emergency Hysterectomy Performed

When conservative measures failed and the uterus entered complete atony, two general surgeons were urgently called in. Together with the two gynecologists present, they performed an emergency hysterectomy—the only viable option to stop the uncontrollable bleeding. The procedure was completed successfully and achieved its primary goal: definitive cessation of hemorrhage.

At that point, the medical team assessed that the patient had a strong chance of recovery. She was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in stable hemodynamic condition, accompanied by the obstetrician who performed the cesarean and an anesthesiologist.

Yet her condition deteriorated in the following hours. By evening, a CT scan was ordered to rule out recurrent bleeding. While the scan ruled out active hemorrhage, her hemodynamic instability persisted. Despite continuous interventions by the ICU and surgical teams, Viosiana suffered cardiac arrest and passed away early Thursday morning.

The tragedy has raised urgent, legitimate questions about the underlying causes of uterine atony and the catastrophic postpartum complications that followed.

Family’s Anguish

Viosiana’s husband spoke to newsit.gr, describing the harrowing hours he spent at his wife’s side—an ordeal marked by fear, helplessness, and grief.
