“When I touched her, I realized something was seriously wrong,” says the husband of a 35-year-old woman from Livadeia who died just hours after giving birth to her second child. The joy of her baby’s arrival lasted only minutes before anxiety swiftly replaced celebration — not for the newborn, but for the mother. She had arrived at Livadeia General Hospital for a scheduled caesarean section, expecting to return home soon with her baby. Instead, she never made it back.

A sudden, devastating turn

The couple’s pregnancy had been uncomplicated, and there were no warning signs ahead of the delivery. After the birth, hospital staff repeatedly assured the husband that “everything was fine” and that he would see his wife shortly. But instead of reuniting with her, he learned hours later that she had been rushed back into surgery — and that her uterus had been removed. No one had informed him beforehand.

Doctors then decided to transfer her to Athens. He was only notified after the transfer had already begun — and up until that point, no one had told him how critical her condition had become.

She was taken to Thriassio General Hospital, where she was placed on mechanical ventilation. There, medical staff told him immediately that her condition was extremely grave. “When I finally saw her, she was intubated. A few hours later, when I touched her, she was cold. That’s when I knew something was terribly wrong. On Thursday morning, they told me my wife hadn’t made it.”

What happened?

The woman lived in Antikyra with her husband and their 8-year-old child. She was admitted to Livadeia Hospital to deliver her second child — a healthy baby boy. Hours after the birth, she developed acute, uncontrollable postpartum haemorrhage. An emergency response was launched: the entire on-duty medical and nursing team rushed to her side.

Given the severity of her condition, doctors urgently arranged her transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Thriassio Hospital. Despite extraordinary efforts by all medical staff involved, her health deteriorated rapidly — and she passed away.

Her death comes just days after another tragic loss: 36-year-old Magda from Mytilene, who also died shortly after childbirth.
