Local communities in Livadeia and Mytilene remain in shock following the tragic deaths of two women shortly after childbirth — both occurring within just two days.
A Planned Delivery Turns Tragic
The 35-year-old Anna had scheduled a cesarean section for Wednesday, 24 June 2026, to deliver her second child. But she never held her newborn in her arms. Hours after giving birth, she died from uncontrolled postpartum hemorrhage at Thriasio General Hospital in Elefsina, where she had been urgently transferred from Livadeia’s local hospital.
She leaves behind an 8-year-old child — and now, a newborn who will never know his mother.
Emergency Investigation Underway
An emergency investigation (ΕΔΕ) has been launched at Thriasio Hospital. According to reports, Anna’s husband spoke to MEGA TV and described a harrowing sequence of events — and a profound lack of communication from medical staff.
“At the Livadeia hospital, they kept telling me, ‘Everything is fine — don’t worry.’ They gave me no reason to be concerned,” he said. “Suddenly, we were rushed to Thriasio. By 3 p.m., I learned that doctors in Livadeia had already performed a hysterectomy — without my knowledge or consent. I waited from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. with no updates on what was happening to my wife.”
Doctors at Thriasio fought desperately to save her life — but it was too late. Twelve hours after the emergency transfer, Anna passed away.
“If what happened to my wife happens again, more women will die in this hospital. I took my wife there to give birth — and I brought home only the baby,” he said.
No Prior Health Issues
Anna had no known health complications during pregnancy. A close friend described her as cheerful, vibrant, and beautiful — a healthy young woman who went into labor like any other expectant mother. “She went to give birth at a public hospital because she couldn’t afford private care. And she bled out. How can someone die giving birth — and not be noticed?” the friend asked.
Second Such Fatality in Two Days
This case marks the second maternal death in Greece within 48 hours. On Friday, 27 June 2026 — one day before Anna’s death — a 36-year-old EKAB physician died in Mytilene, Lesvos, shortly after delivering her first child. She developed complications post-delivery and was transferred to an Athens-area hospital on Tuesday, 26 June — but succumbed before reaching the capital. The cause of her death is still under investigation.
