Lina Mendoni Orders Halt of Construction Works at Panathenaic Stadium

On the morning of March 28, 2025, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni conducted an inspection following a publication by the newspaper ‘DEMOCRACY’ regarding a construction project in front of the Panathenaic Stadium. During the inspection, Minister Mendoni confirmed a clear violation of the current legal framework, specifically Law 4858/2021 concerning the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage. According to the Ministry of Culture’s announcement, the temporary construction had been approved by the Hellenic Olympic Committee within its jurisdiction and the General Directorate for the Restoration of Museums and Technical Works of the Ministry of Culture, based on unanimous advice from the Central Council of Modern Monuments. The Minister instructed relevant services to immediately halt the works and ensure compliance with any conditions set by the decision of the General Directorate for the Restoration of Museums and Technical Works. Simultaneously, she requested the urgent convening of the Council for immediate re-evaluation of the issue according to current regulations.
