Life and health insurance premiums in Greece rose by 3.5% in 2025 compared to 2024, reaching €975.2 million — nearing the €1 billion mark. According to the Hellenic Association of Insurance Companies (HAIC), this figure reflects new business written during the year across life and health insurance lines.
Breakdown by Policy Type
Of the total, €870.4 million came from individual policies, while group policies contributed €104.8 million. The growth was driven by a modest 1% rise in individual policies, a stronger 12.1% increase in group policies, and a significant 34.5% jump in reinsurance acceptances for life and health coverage.
Claims and Payouts
Overall claims paid by insurers edged up by just 0.5% year-on-year. This slight increase stemmed from a 1.8% decline in claims under individual policies, offset by an 8.3% rise in claims related to group policies.
New Business Trends
Despite higher premium income, the volume of new business declined by 6.4% annually. Individual policies fell by 9.5%, while group policies surged by 30.7%. Lump-sum payments accounted for €621 million of new business in 2025 — €579.4 million from individual policies and €41.6 million from group policies.
Group Pension Plans Stand Out
Pension-related group insurance programs were a key driver of growth, totaling €327 million in 2025 — up 12.6% from €290.4 million in 2024. HAIC attributes this rebound to the unusually low base in 2024, which itself followed a sharp 28.3% drop from 2023 levels.
