A terrifying incident unfolded on Sunday, 28 June 2026, in Lemnos, when a five-year-old child was swept far out to sea while floating on an inflatable mattress. The incident occurred in the afternoon, during a period of strong winds across the island.

Rescue Operation Launched

The boy was reportedly swimming near the Platy Bay area when high waves carried him away—leaving his guardians unable to reach him from shore. Local emergency protocols were activated immediately. A coast guard patrol vessel, a dedicated rescue boat, and three additional vessels launched from land to locate and retrieve the child.

Successful Rescue and Medical Assessment

The boy was eventually recovered by a rescue boat and brought safely ashore. He is reported to be in good health.

Two Arrested for Endangering Minor

Following the incident, the Myrina Port Authority—leading the preliminary investigation—arrested two 37-year-old Romanian nationals, identified as the child’s guardians, on charges of exposing a minor to danger.
