Larissa Hostage Standoff Ends Peacefully

Larissa: Off-Duty Officer Persuades Hostage-Taker to Surrender by Appealing to His Children

In a tense standoff in Larissa, an off-duty police officer played a pivotal role in convincing a 50-year-old man to surrender after he took his ex-wife hostage, threatened her with an axe and a gasoline canister, and broadcast the incident live on social media.

A Crisis Unfolds on Live Stream

Video footage released to the public shows the man holding an axe and a container of flammable liquid inside his apartment. His ex-wife, visibly distressed but attempting to remain calm, is seen following his orders—moving around the apartment and onto the balcony. Every moment carried the risk of tragedy, as even a misstep could have escalated the situation fatally.

The Role of Trust and Empathy

Officer Giannis Thelouras, a personal friend of the suspect, was called to the scene around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2026. Alongside a police negotiator and another officer, he positioned himself on the balcony of a neighboring apartment to establish visual contact and begin dialogue.

“He was on the balcony, clearly in distress—holding an axe in one hand and a gasoline canister in the other,” Thelouras told ANT1’s Proino program the following morning. “At first, communication was nearly impossible. But we eventually entered the apartment and tried to convince him that this path led nowhere—and he realized, himself, how grave a mistake he’d made.”

The officer explained that the suspect had been demanding to speak directly with the prosecutor who issued custody-related rulings involving his children—measures that had restricted his access to them. “The turning point—the key to persuading him—was his children,” Thelouras said in remarks to onlarissa.gr. “I kept telling him to think about them, to stop before it was too late. That’s when he broke down—and everything ended peacefully.”

Aftermath and Legal Proceedings

The man was brought before the Larissa Misdemeanor Court, where the ex-wife’s attorney requested protective measures for her client. According to Thelouras, the woman remained remarkably composed throughout the ordeal—not panicked, but deeply aware of the stakes.
