In a significant demonstration of domestic defense innovation, the Greek military’s anti-drone system ‘Teukros’ successfully intercepted and brought down an unauthorized drone attempting to deliver contraband into the Larissa Prison complex. Real-Time Detection and Neutralization
The unmanned aerial vehicle was detected flying over the prison grounds by personnel from the External Security Service and prison staff. Once identified, the specialized Teukros counter-drone system—developed by the Research, Technological Development and Innovation Centre (KETAK) under the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA)—was immediately activated. It neutralized the drone before its payload could reach the interior of the facility.

This operation forms part of an ongoing collaboration between the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Citizen Protection—specifically with the General Secretariat for Anti-Crime Policy. As part of this effort, KETAK has deployed Teukros systems across key correctional facilities nationwide to strengthen perimeter security against emerging aerial threats.
According to reports from onlarissa.gr, the drone’s payload included 12 mobile phones, four mobile internet devices, and 20 SIM cards—all seized upon interception. These items are strictly prohibited inside Greek prisons due to their potential use in facilitating illegal communications and organized criminal activity.

The successful deployment underscores the operational value of homegrown defense technologies developed by GEETHA/KETAK. It also highlights the Armed Forces’ growing role—not only in national defense—but in supporting broader state institutions through technical expertise and cutting-edge capabilities.
Building on this success, the General Secretariat for Anti-Crime Policy will soon receive an additional 25 next-generation Teukros II systems. These upgraded units, also supplied by GEETHA/KETAK, are designed for enhanced detection range, faster response times, and improved integration with existing security infrastructure—aimed at further bolstering the protection of Greece’s correctional facilities.
