In a deeply sorrowful atmosphere, the funeral of the late deputy mayor of Lamia, Kostas Stavrogannis, took place on Monday afternoon (June 23, 2025). The tragic incident occurred on Sunday on the Prophitis Ilias regional road. The Sacred Metropolitan Church of the Evangelism of the Mother Mary in Lamia was packed with mourners who knew the deceased. The 64-year-old deputy mayor passed away at the scene, while his 54-year-old wife suffered severe injuries and the 34-year-old driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries. Colleagues from both levels of local government, politicians, and representatives of all local authorities were present to pay their respects. Outside the church, police closed Ypsilantis Street to accommodate the large crowd gathered for the deputy mayor’s final journey. The ceremony concluded with applause and cries of ‘worthy’ as the hearse was loaded onto the vehicle that transported him to his birthplace, Kalamaki, where he will now rest eternally. The exit procession was led by the Most Reverend Metropolitan of Phthiotis, Simeon, and the eulogy was delivered by the President of the Municipal Council, Makis Prentzas. A three-day mourning period has been declared in the Municipality of Lamia, with the flag flying at half-mast at the Town Hall.
