Today (26 June 2026), the swearing-in ceremony for new recruits of the 2026 2nd Basic Training Battalion took place at the Centre for War Material Training (KEYP) in Lamia — marking a historic milestone: for the first time, women have taken the oath as voluntary conscripts in the Hellenic Army, committing to a 12-month term of service.

The first cohort of female volunteers entered the KEYП Lamia facility on 4 June and will remain there for 10 weeks to complete the first phase of their basic military training.

The voluntary enlistment program is open to women aged 20 to 26. Upon completing basic combat training, they will move on to specialized training centres for a second stage of instruction — a four-week course focused on acquiring specific military occupational skills.

A Symbolic Moment

Greek Deputy Minister of National Defence Thanasis Davakis attended the ceremony and delivered a speech underscoring its historic significance: “Today carries deep, historic symbolism. For the first time, Greek women — choosing voluntarily to serve in the armed forces — stand side by side with their male colleagues, taking the same sacred oath of loyalty to the Fatherland.”

He added: “Here, at the historic ‘Brigadier General Konstantinos Tsakalou’ Camp in Lamia, they have successfully completed their first step. From today, they advance to the next stage of training — where, in the coming weeks, they will acquire all the skills of the modern fighter.”

Concluding his address, the Deputy Minister extended his congratulations: “I congratulate each and every one of you on successfully completing this first phase. I welcome you into the ranks of the Hellenic Armed Forces — and wish you strength, good health, and every success in the remainder of your service.”
