The community of Lamia is in shock following the sudden death of 64-year-old deputy mayor Kostas Stavrogiannis on Sunday morning (June 22, 2025). The tragic accident occurred near the city entrance when a Mercedes driven by a 34-year-old businessman collided with a Renault driven by the deputy mayor’s wife, where the deputy mayor himself was a passenger. According to the deposition provided to newsit.gr, the driver of the Mercedes described the scene in vivid detail. He explained that he left his girlfriend’s house after receiving a work-related call. As he drove along the new regional road toward Agios Loukas, visibility was limited due to poor lighting and a sharp 90-degree turn. The lack of a clear centerline exacerbated the situation. The collision happened almost instantly as he suddenly noticed the oncoming vehicle. Despite braking immediately, the vehicles collided near the unclear dividing line. Both cars sustained damage to their front-left sections. The driver escaped with minor injuries but quickly rushed to assist the victims. Unfortunately, neither occupant of the Renault was wearing seatbelts, contributing to the severity of the incident. The driver expressed sincere regret, noting that while he had consumed one glass of whiskey earlier, he believed himself fit to drive safely. Legal proceedings are ongoing as the accused awaits further investigation.
