Lagard (ECB): We hope to achieve the 2% inflation target in 2025

The goal of the European Central Bank (ECB) for 2% is visible, according to the president. “We have made significant progress in 2024 in reducing inflation and we hope that 2025 will be the year we will be within the target, as expected and as planned in our strategy,” Christine Lagarde said in a video posted in X yesterday (1.1.2024). CORVERSE “Of course we will continue our efforts to ensure that inflation will stabilise steadily in this medium-term 2% target,” she stressed. The growth in consumer prices in the eurozone slowed down during last year and in September fell below the ECB’s target, although in recent months it has grown again and Lagard warned that it would range around the current level in the near future, Bloomberg says. Nevertheless, this slowdown allowed policy makers to reduce interest rates to four movements of the fourth units and economists predict four further reductions by June. Describing the ECB’s 2025 programme as a “big and heavy agenda”, Lagard also stressed the revision of the central bank’s monetary policy strategy, the digital euro and the redesign of euro area banknotes, although the last project will not be completed this year.
