On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Attica General Hospital. During his visit, he had the opportunity to speak with citizens and members of the nursing staff. Mitsotakis was guided by Deputy Health Minister Mario Themistokleous through the fully renovated Emergency Department (ED) of KAT, which has been expanded and modernized. The ED now has the capacity to handle emergencies of all severity levels, serving approximately 87,000 patients annually. Mitsotakis also visited other hospital units, including the completely renovated rehabilitation center on the 5th floor, and was updated on the progress of works on the remaining floors. He spoke with citizens and staff, including doctors who returned to Greece from abroad. ‘Here is our home,’ one doctor who returned from the UK told him. Mitsotakis was informed by the administrator Ioannis Eliopoulos about the increased capabilities of KAT, whose budget rose nearly 70% in the previous five years, reaching €66.3 million in 2024. The workforce has increased by 191 since 2019, totaling 1,480 employees today. Consequently, KAT performs 15,000 surgeries annually, and its outpatient clinics serve around 110,000 citizens each year. These projects are part of a broader plan to upgrade all levels of the public healthcare system using Recovery and Resilience Fund resources. According to reports, renovations and upgrades at 16 additional EDs in Attica are expected to be completed within the next few months.
