In an article titled ‘Our Weapons in the Fight Against the Housing Crisis,’ Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis wrote for the digital publication Onside by NEDE. Addressing primarily the younger generation and their main challenge—housing—Mitsotakis emphasized that rising rents, limited availability, and unstable market conditions make securing affordable housing one of the biggest obstacles for today’s youth. The government under New Democracy recognizes housing as a fundamental right accessible to all. Therefore, it is not merely documenting the problem but actively combating it with decisive action and targeted measures. Recent initiatives include rental subsidies benefiting approximately 1.3 million citizens and increased student housing allowances up to €2,500. Long-term solutions like the ‘My Home’ program have seen impressive responses with over 37,500 applications already submitted. Additionally, incentives are provided to bring unused properties back into circulation and encourage investors towards repurposing abandoned buildings. Overall, the government is implementing 40 actions with a budget exceeding €6.5 billion, focusing on dignity, stability, and certainty in housing.
