Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has acknowledged mistakes and delays in governance, particularly concerning the OPEKEPE agricultural subsidy agency, during his weekly Facebook post marking six years since New Democracy assumed power in July 2019. Speaking candidly about both achievements and shortcomings, Mitsotakis emphasized that Greece is stronger, fairer, and more modern today, but admitted there is still much to be done.
Mitsotakis outlined key accomplishments of his administration, including historically low unemployment rates, economic growth surpassing the Eurozone average, record foreign investments, and major reforms in healthcare, justice, public administration, pensions, labor rights, education, transport, defense, and civil protection. He also highlighted recent European funding agreements totaling €8 billion for climate, modernization, and decarbonization efforts across Greece until 2032.
However, he did not shy away from criticism, especially regarding OPEKEPE, where systemic issues were not corrected in a timely manner. ‘I was among the first to acknowledge many mistakes, delays, and misjudgments,’ Mitsotakis stated, taking political responsibility. ‘We are not hiding behind our fingers.’ He stressed the need for a new culture of accountability and legality, moving away from outdated clientelist practices.
The Prime Minister also addressed other pressing matters, such as housing policy for young people, educational partnerships with prestigious international universities, and targeted investments aimed at addressing real societal needs. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency, reform, and progress while preparing citizens for further changes ahead.
Mitsotakis concluded by reflecting on the importance of reflection and renewal, drawing inspiration from a recent visit to Mount Athos, a spiritual center that symbolizes continuity and stability in a rapidly changing world.
