Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the Syntagma Police Station in central Athens to apply for his new police-issued national identity card. Accompanied by the required documents, he completed the standard procedure, including fingerprinting.
Process and Timeline
After taking his fingerprints, the officer informed Mitsotakis when his new ID would be ready and confirmed that he would receive an email notification upon completion. The Prime Minister then signed the necessary paperwork before departing the station on Syntagma Square.
Deadline Looms for All Citizens
The deadline for issuing new biometric IDs is approaching — expiring in just a few weeks. Under EU Regulation (EU) 2019/1157, national identity cards without a machine-readable zone (MRZ) will cease to be valid as of 3 August 2026. This means Greek citizens who have not yet applied for the updated ID may face travel restrictions abroad after that date.
