Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the establishment of a National Authority to oversee the market and consumer protection, modeled after Swedish standards, during his presentation at the Maximos Mansion on Wednesday morning (28.5.25). Additionally, he foreshadowed stricter penalties for immigration violations. The focus of the cabinet meeting under Mitsotakis included issues of accuracy, immigration, and Artificial Intelligence. The Prime Minister began his address by referencing the anniversary of the signing of Greece’s Accession Treaty to the then EEC by Konstantinos Karamanlis on May 28, 1979: “An event that sealed our destiny with Europe. And which we honor 46 years later, with the country at the forefront of developments on our continent, having overcome mutual trials, including a multi-year economic crisis.” In his presentation, Mitsotakis announced the establishment of the National Authority to monitor the market and protect consumers according to Swedish standards. “Price gouging continues to threaten middle and low-income households. In the fight against overpricing, we are adding an additional weapon,” emphasized the Prime Minister. Regarding immigration, he highlighted that there will be harsher penalties for those who enter or remain in the country illegally if their asylum applications have been rejected. “The goal is a safer and better everyday life for Greek women and men, with a milestone being Greece in 2030,” mentioned Kyriakos Mitsotakis. On the abolition of OPKEPE, he stated, “When a Gordian knot cannot be untied, it must be cut. In the name of timeless responsibilities of the entire political world, the government has decided to restore justice and transparency in agricultural subsidies.”
