Kostas Panolakis: No connection of earthquakes in Cyclades and the volcano in Santorini

The “worst” vibration scenario above 6 points on the Richter scale cannot be excluded, Professor Costas Panolakis appreciated Monday night (03.02.20205) commenting on them in the surrounding Santorini. As earthquakes in the Cyclades for another 24 hours continue, the question arises whether the vibrations are connected to the volcano of Santorini. CORVERSE The Professor of Natural Disasters of Southern California University, the chairman of the Scientific Committee on Climate Change in Greece and a regular member of the Academy of Athens, speaking to ANT1 did not rule out an earthquake of more than 6 Richter, “but we are prepared much better than before,” he stressed. For the question, whether the Santorini volcano can affect intense seismic activity, which has been evolving over the last few days in the wider area of the Cyclades and the Dodecanese islands, Mr.Sololakis revealed that the scientific community still cannot answer this question with certainty, as long as research by seismographers continues on the bottom of the island. The professor reported that in the 2011 earthquake activity the vibrations were occurring within Caldera, while now on the island of Anhydro, and also identified large differences in the preparation of populations and authorities. CORVERSE He pointed out, however, that either there is a small explosion or an activation of the underwater watershed of Andros, a tsunami will probably follow, which should lead to any citizens who may be near a beach, being immediately removed from the coastline. More generally he estimated that despite modern earthquake structures and the lesser risk of infrastructure disasters, the “worst” vibration scenario over 6 points of the Richter scale is something that cannot be excluded.
