The lawyers of Kiriaki Griba’s parents, who was murdered in Agioi Anargyroi, issued a strong statement on Wednesday (July 2, 2025), revealing that the victim had accused her partner of rape three years before he ultimately killed her. The legal team, consisting of Giannis Apatsidis, Chrysobalantis Glinos, Eleni Mazarakis, and Elena Tzouli, highlighted serious failures in the justice system’s handling of domestic violence complaints filed by Griba during her pregnancy.
According to the statement, Kiriaki Griba reported both rape and physical abuse by the perpetrator in November 2020. Despite immediate reporting—within hours of the alleged crime—no criminal charges were ever filed against the man for rape. Additionally, no restrictive measures were imposed on him, nor did he participate in any court-mandated rehabilitation program.
The case was eventually heard by the Single-Member Court of Athens for bodily harm against a vulnerable individual (a pregnant woman). However, the accused was acquitted in November 2024 without the victim’s family being called to testify, and without proper evaluation of Griba’s sworn testimony or the fact that the accused never attended the required reintegration program.
The lawyers criticized the judicial process, citing inappropriate courtroom conditions, selective recording of proceedings, and the lack of involvement of key witnesses such as the forensic expert. They also condemned the failure to enforce legal procedures that could have prevented the murder if earlier allegations had been taken seriously.
They urged the competent authorities to reassess the legal characterization of the crimes committed, file appropriate appeals against the controversial acquittal, and urgently refer the perpetrator for all offenses arising from this shocking case. The statement emphasized a broader concern regarding systemic tolerance of violence against women and vulnerable individuals within the state apparatus.
