Today (01.05.2025), Minister of Maritime Affairs and Island Policy, Vasilis Kikilias, was in Syros where he officially announced that there will be no increase in ferry ticket prices, neither for May Day nor throughout the summer season. Speaking to journalists and in a personal Instagram post, Kikilias stated: “Happy month, with good news, as confirmed by the market this morning. There will be no increase in ferry ticket prices, now or during the entire summer period. Safe travels to all, good seas, and we will continue working in this direction. We aim to support Greek families, ensuring that travel from mainland destinations and our large ports to all islands remains affordable.” Simultaneously, sources from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs revealed that ferry companies had initially planned price hikes of 12-15% due to the increased cost of low-emission fuel, mandatory since May 1 under EU regulations. To counteract these increases, the government reduced port fees by 50%, offsetting a significant portion of the additional costs ferry companies face. This measure allowed prices to remain stable at current levels. For example, without intervention, the cost of a passenger ticket from Piraeus to Paros would have risen from €45 to approximately €50. A four-member family traveling to Naxos with children would face an additional burden exceeding €40. Similar increases were expected for more distant destinations like Santorini and Lesbos.
