A powerful thunderstorm struck Kavala on Friday afternoon, June 26, 2026, sending shockwaves across the coastal region. Violent wind gusts caused several lifeguard towers to collapse at organized beaches — including Nea Irakleitsa, Glastres, Kalamitsa, and Perigiali — injuring a 21-year-old lifeguard.
Most Serious Incident at Nea Irakleitsa Beach
The most serious incident occurred at Nea Irakleitsa beach, where a collapsing lifeguard tower struck the young woman. She was rushed immediately to Kavala General Hospital for emergency treatment and remains hospitalized.
Widespread Damage and Ongoing Investigation
The brief but intense storm brought exceptionally strong winds, disrupting activities along the coast and catching both swimmers and professionals off guard. In addition to the damaged lifeguard infrastructure, authorities reported fallen tree branches and minor property damage across parts of the regional unit.
The Central Port Authority of Kavala confirmed it had been notified of the incidents and has launched a preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tower collapses and the lifeguard’s injury.
