Katerina Notopoulou submitted her resignation as a SYRIZA MP on Wednesday, 8 July 2026 — adding another twist to the rapid developments unfolding at the party’s headquarters on Kouponiou Street in Athens.
According to reports, Notopoulou spoke by phone with SYRIZA leader Sokratis Famellos to inform him of her decision. She also sent an official letter to Nikitas Kaklamanis, Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament, formally notifying him of her resignation.
A Move Amid Internal Turbulence
Her resignation comes just days before a pivotal meeting of SYRIZA’s Central Committee scheduled for Saturday, 11 July 2026. It arrives amid heightened internal tensions within the party, as shifting power dynamics are tested against the backdrop of former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ recent re-emergence and broader realignments across Greece’s centre-left political landscape.
Succession Expected
The parliamentary seat vacated by Notopoulou is expected to be filled by Giannis Amanatidis, the first alternate candidate on SYRIZA’s electoral list. Sources indicate Amanatidis intends to assume the seat. A former Deputy Minister of National Defence and Foreign Affairs, he reportedly believes SYRIZA must remain an independent political force.
