A medical emergency unfolded in Kastoria when a 4-year-old child slipped away from relatives’ supervision and fell into a swimming pool, losing consciousness before being rescued. The boy is currently hospitalized in critical but stable condition at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of a Thessaloniki hospital, after receiving initial life-saving interventions following his rescue from the pool.
Rescue and Emergency Response
According to reports by ERTnews, the child briefly left the line of sight of family members and entered the pool unnoticed. When relatives discovered him submerged, they pulled him from the water unconscious — he had already suffered cardiac arrest.
An ambulance from Greece’s National Center for Emergency Care (EKAB) arrived promptly and transported the boy to the General Hospital of Kastoria. There, medical and nursing staff launched immediate and intensive resuscitation efforts. After prolonged cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), doctors successfully revived the child.
Critical Care and Transfer
Given the severity of his condition, the child was urgently intubated. A coordinated, high-priority transfer — described as a ‘bridge of life’ — was swiftly organized between EKAB and local authorities. With rapid response protocols activated, the boy was safely airlifted or transferred by ground ambulance to Thessaloniki’s specialized pediatric ICU.
He remains under close medical observation, with specialists monitoring his recovery closely.
