In the wake of recent departures from the newly formed political movement Hope for Democracy and public allegations by former collaborators, party founder Maria Karystianou has moved to reassert control. She announced a provisional Political Council — a strategic step aimed at projecting unity, continuity, and institutional discipline amid internal turbulence, even before the movement has fully formalized its structure.

A Response to Rising Doubts

The move comes as a direct response to growing skepticism surrounding the movement’s stability and leadership. By establishing the council, Karystianou seeks to shift the narrative away from resignations and accusations and toward political organization and forward momentum.

Mandate and Scope

According to the official announcement, the provisional council was formed “to ensure collective effort” by the independent citizens’ movement Hope for Democracy and to advance its policy proposals. It will operate until the movement’s inaugural congress is held.

The council’s responsibilities are broad: shaping the movement’s political and overall strategic direction; addressing urgent political and organizational challenges; and drafting foundational statutes that will govern the party’s future operations. The announcement emphasizes safeguarding the movement’s “smooth and upward trajectory,” with stated goals including “the regeneration of the homeland” and defending citizens’ interests.

Nine-Member Composition

The provisional council currently comprises nine members: Maria Gratsia, Thanasis Avgirinos, Dimitris Panagiotopoulos, Kyriakos Panagopoulos, Christos Papasideris, Giorgos Drosos, Maria Ioannidou, Giannis Chatziantonios, and Michalis Christodoulidis.

Notably, the composition is not fixed. The announcement states the council will be periodically renewed based on evolving needs and the movement’s ongoing expansion — leaving room for new appointments and internal reshuffles as the initiative strives for greater institutional stability.

Karystianou’s Message

Signing the announcement as president, Karystianou extended her best wishes for “productive and creative work” to the council members. She linked the movement’s success to the Greek people’s aspirations — to live in their country “with truth, integrity, justice, equality, democratic functioning of institutions, and national dignity.”
