A major fire broke out in an apartment in Kallithea, a southern suburb of Athens, at around 3:30 a.m. today (6 July 2026), the cause of which remains unknown. Firefighters arriving on scene found a 70-year-old man unconscious in his bedroom.
Victim Hospitalized in Critical Condition
According to ERT, the man lived in the apartment — located between Arapaki and Thiseos streets — with his brother, who is nearly the same age. The 70-year-old was rushed to the Evangelismos Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
Brother Refuses Medical Transport
Firefighters also located the man’s brother in an adjacent room. Though he reported respiratory difficulties, he declined hospital transport.
Extent of Damage
The apartment sustained extensive damage but was not completely destroyed. According to the Hellenic Fire Service, 12 firefighters responded using four vehicles to bring the blaze under control.
