75-Year-Old Survives Kallithea House Fire

Kallithea: 75-Year-Old Woman Survives House Fire After Jumping Into Crowd’s Arms

What unfolded on Sunday afternoon in Kallithea, a southern suburb of Athens, left witnesses stunned and deeply moved. A fire broke out in a two-storey residential building on Agion Panton and Aristeidou streets shortly after 4 p.m. on June 28, 2026. As thick smoke and flames rapidly consumed the home, a 75-year-old woman found herself trapped on her balcony — with no escape but to jump.

A Desperate Leap to Safety

Onlookers gathered below, raising their hands and urging her to leap. In a moment of sheer instinct and trust, she jumped — landing safely in the arms of strangers who formed an impromptu human safety net. Her husband, who had managed to escape moments earlier, called out from below, though she couldn’t hear him over the roar of the fire and the chaos around her.

‘A Thousand Thanks to Everyone’

Speaking exclusively to newsit.gr, the woman — now recovering at her daughter’s home — expressed profound gratitude. ‘I’m doing better now, and I want to thank, from the depths of my heart, everyone who helped us,’ she said. ‘They brought us water, clothes, shoes — I was barefoot. A thousand thanks to everyone. May their families be well.’

She recalled waking from a nap after hearing her husband shout, ‘Smoke — what’s burning?’ Within minutes, flames engulfed the house. ‘I don’t know how the fire started,’ she added. ‘It seems it began near the entrance, but I can’t say for sure. My husband woke first and alerted me. We ran outside and saw the fire — but I still don’t know its origin.’

Describing the terrifying moments on the balcony, she said: ‘People were shouting from below — “Jump, jump!” The smoke filled everything. My husband came out of the kitchen calling me, but I couldn’t hear him. So I jumped — and I was saved. My husband is doing better too. He slept in the car last night; I’m staying with my daughter. We’ll go see him soon.’

She ended simply: ‘I have nothing else to say — only that I want to thank everyone for their help. A thousand thanks.’

Her daughter also spoke with newsit.gr, providing further details about the family’s ordeal and recovery.
