A tragedy unfolded just after midnight on Thursday, 25 June 2026, in Kallithea, a southeastern suburb of Athens, where a 17-year-old boy died from a stab wound following a violent confrontation. According to eyewitness accounts, the clash erupted shortly after midnight near a residential street, involving at least 10 people. Amid the chaos, one individual reportedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the teenager in the abdomen.

Emergency Response and Hospitalization

An EKAB ambulance rushed to the scene and transported the youth to Hippokration Hospital in critical condition. Despite emergency medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.

Police Investigation Underway

Greek police launched an extensive investigation, conducting 14 summonses in connection with the incident. Officers recovered the suspected murder weapon — a knife — near the scene; it has been sent to forensic laboratories for analysis and identification. Authorities are probing the circumstances surrounding the altercation, with early indications pointing toward fan-related tensions as a possible motive.

Eyewitnesses Describe Chaos and Panic

Local residents described hearing a brief but intense argument, prompting many to rush outside or onto their balconies. One neighbor, who arrived at the scene moments after the attack, recounted the harrowing moments in an interview with Orange Press Agency.

“We saw the guys running, and then the boy — covered in blood — lying on the road,” she said. She estimated the victim’s age at around 16 or 17 and emphasized that he was unconscious within five to ten minutes of the stabbing. “We tried to help him, but he lost consciousness quickly.”

The witness added that while police responded swiftly, the ambulance took over half an hour to arrive — a delay she stressed as critical. She also confirmed that the suspects discarded the knife before fleeing — police later found it thrown into an abandoned building nearby.

Clash Reportedly Stemmed from Fan Rivalry

The same witness suggested the fight may have originated from football fan rivalries. “It’s about fan differences — you know what I mean,” she said, adding that the victim had been stabbed in the stomach and that locals feared he was already dead when they reached him.

She recalled that neighbors first heard shouting — including a man screaming — before seeing the group scatter and the teen collapse in the street, bleeding heavily.
