The US president will postpone the threatened tariffs on Canadian imports for at least 30 days, the prime minister said in an X post on Monday (03/02/2025). At the same time as Canada the US will suspend the imposition of tariffs on Mexico for a month, country president Claudia Seinbaum announced, after having had a conversation with American President Donald Trump. “I am sure that in this month we can achieve results,” he said at the press conference he granted. Trump, on his post, confirmed that it was agreed to suspend the customs duties to be imposed tomorrow (04/02/2025). Negotiations will begin to reach a ‘agreement’ between the two countries in which he and Foreign Ministers Marco Rubio, Finance Scott Bessend and Trade Minister candidate Howard Lutnik will participate. Seinbaum said she had a “good” and “long” debate with Trump on issues of “reciprocal interest” and that she proposed suspending customs duties. At the same time, he asked Trump to help Mexico stop smuggling weapons from the US and he agreed. According to Seinbaum, Mexico will immediately develop 10,000 national guards at the border with the US to deal with drug trafficking. He added that he considers the deal reached with Washington to be good after helping Mexico strengthen its border security. Sheinbaum however stressed that her country would defend and always support Mexican immigrants. The teams of the two countries began working today on “safety and business,” he added. President Trump insisted on his part to address the trade deficit between the two countries, but Seinbaum said she “reacted” on this proposal.
