Jair Bolsonaro’s Health Deteriorates After 12-Hour Surgery

The health condition of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has worsened following a 12-hour surgical intervention he underwent two weeks ago in Brazil. His medical team reported today that he is experiencing increased blood pressure and liver enzymes. On April 13, the 70-year-old underwent extensive surgery, marking the fifth since he was stabbed in the abdomen during a 2018 election campaign. Since then, Bolsonaro has remained in intensive care. A supporter of the military regime, Bolsonaro served as Brazil’s president from 2019 to 2022. He had campaigned for amnesty for supporters who stormed and looted government buildings in Brasilia after losing the 2022 elections to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Last month, Brazil’s Supreme Court unanimously decided to send Bolsonaro to trial for allegedly attempting a coup. If convicted, he could face a lengthy prison sentence.
