Italy Rejects Hasty and Illogical European Defense Plan

Italian Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti has opposed a European defense plan, calling it ‘hasty and illogical.’ He emphasized that a well-thought-out defense and security plan based on long-term investment programs and military infrastructure would be more appropriate. ‘To buy drones or supersonic missiles, you don’t go to the supermarket; it requires multi-year investments,’ added Italy’s Finance Minister. According to the Italian minister, representing the Lega party, ‘Europe may want to play some role, but without the United States, such an endeavor seems very difficult.’ On the other hand, Italian Foreign Minister and head of Forza Italia, Antonio Tajani, expressed a differing opinion, stating that ‘this is not about a new arms race but rather strengthening our security.’ ‘We are talking about overall enhancement of our security, and we must not forget that Italy boasts advanced defense industries with valuable expertise. This also involves significant research efforts, and we can take action to increase the number of employees working in our defense industry,’ Tajani noted.
