Italy pushes for the release of journalist Cecilia Sala who remains imprisoned in Iran

Her continues to seek the release of journalist Cecilia Sala, who was arrested in 19 December 2024. The Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Italy, Ricardo Guarrilia, today had a meeting with Iran’s ambassador to Rome. CORVERSE The Italian diplomat again asked for the 29-year-old envoy to be released and, meanwhile, to guarantee her decent conditions of detention, with respect for human rights. Iran’s ambassador – for his part – stressed that his country is calling for the process of releasing Iranian citizen Mohammad Abedini, who was arrested in Milan on 16 December, to be speeded up on the basis of an international arrest warrant for arms trafficking. According to Italian analysts, the decision to arrest the Italian journalist, a few hours before returning to Rome from Tehran, is essentially a retaliation for Abedini’s arrest. This afternoon, too, a meeting was held at the Palazzo Kiji government palace, attended by Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, Foreign Ministers, Antonio Tayani, Defence Guido Crozeto and the heads of the country’s secret services, dedicated to the necessary moves to achieve the release of the reporter. Meloni, last but not least, met with her mother Chechilia Sala, who assured that every effort was made to return as soon as possible, her daughter, to the Italian capital. “I am satisfied with the meeting, the Prime Minister informed me in a detailed and precise manner. It was exactly what I had asked,” the journalist’s mother told reporters.
