Italy: Coronavirus increases poverty

According to official data from the Italian Institute of Statistics Istat, 7.7% of Italian households in 2020 were living in poverty. In 2019, the corresponding percentage was 6.4% and the increase, according to analysts, is mainly due to the consequences of the new coronavirus pandemic.

9.4% of households in the south of Italy live in absolute poverty, while at the same time, this percentage shows an increase in the northern regions of Italy: in 2020 it was 7.6%, compared to 5.8% in the previous year.

Regarding the different age groups, 11.3% of the inhabitants of the country 18 to 34 years old face absolute poverty, among the citizens 35 to 64 years old it is 9.2%, while the percentage of those who live in conditions of absolute poverty is limited at 5.4% for those over 65 years old.
