Egypt Ombudsman said Saturday (18.01.2025) that it is going to release more than 1890 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 33 Israeli hostages in the first phase of the truce in . Israel’s foreign ministry said Palestinian prisoners would be released during the first phase 42 days of the Gaza Strip scheduled to begin Sunday morning. CORVERSE Qatar, which mediated the agreement along with Egypt and the United States, had announced that 33 hostages would be released from Hamas during the first phase, who were kidnapped during the October 7, 2023 attack marking the start of the war. Israel’s Justice Ministry had earlier stated that 737 Palestinian prisoners and prisoners will be released — none before 16:00 (14:00 Greek time) on Sunday. Of the 251 hostages during the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, 94 are still in Gaza, including 34 that the Israeli army says are dead. CORVERSE Sunday’s ceasefire will only be the second truce in 15 months of war in the Gaza Strip, which has cost life to more than 50,000 lives and destroyed Palestinian territory. The truce is due to enter into force on the eve of Donald Trump’s inauguration for a second term as president of the US.
