New tensions flared along the Israel-Lebanon border on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, after the Israeli military announced it had opened fire on four individuals in southern Lebanon. According to the army, the group — identified as Hezbollah members — entered a so-called ‘security zone’ controlled by Israeli forces. The incident occurred despite a pause in Israeli airstrikes since Saturday night.
Clash Near the Security Zone
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the four individuals were traveling on a motorcycle and an excavator toward a location where soldiers were stationed. After issuing warning shots, troops fired directly when the group continued advancing. In a statement, the IDF said: “The terrorists kept approaching and ignored soldiers’ warnings; additional fire was used to eliminate the threat.”
Hezbollah Denies Armed Presence, Accuses Israel of Breach
Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group, rejected the Israeli account, claiming its forces targeted civilians in southern Lebanon. It described the incident as a violation of the existing ceasefire agreement between the two sides. In its official statement, Hezbollah said two people were killed and others wounded in the shooting — though it did not specify whether retaliatory action is planned.
Lebanese President Reaffirms Sovereignty Demand
Meanwhile, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun reiterated his opposition to Israel’s presence in southern Lebanon and made an indirect reference to Iranian influence during the opening of the fifth round of Israel–Lebanon talks in Washington, D.C. “We accept nothing less than the end of Israeli occupation and the end of foreign guardianship, because our only option is national sovereignty and our sole stake is the Lebanese state,” Aoun said, according to his office. He expressed hope that the U.S.-hosted negotiations would meaningfully advance Lebanon’s full territorial sovereignty.
Washington Talks Enter New Phase
A new round of diplomatic and military talks between Israel and Lebanon began in Washington, as confirmed by the Israeli embassy in the United States. The embassy noted that discussions will proceed simultaneously at both diplomatic and military levels. According to CNN, the process starts with a joint session of political and military representatives, followed by separate military talks and concluding with political consultations — a structure confirmed Monday by a U.S. State Department official.
