Major General Eyal Zamir, until earlier Secretary General of his Ministry of Defence, was appointed as the new Chief of the General Staff of the Israeli (IDF), after Lieutenant General Herji Khalevi resigned. Major General Zamir was the favourite for the leadership of Israel’s army, as he was the choice of both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and newly appointed Defence Minister, Israel Katz. The other two candidates were army lieutenant general, Major General Amir Baram, and commanding ground forces, Major General Tamir Yadai. Khalevi announced early in the year that he quits IDF leadership, after “recognizing his responsibility for the army’s failure during Hamas attack on October 7, 2023”. 59-year-old Major General Zamir will take the position on March 6, and will become the 24th Chief of Staff of the IDF. Khalevi and Zamir had today, Monday, February 3, 2025, their first working meeting. CORVERSE Once he takes over, he will be responsible for the appointment of many commanders, both because the appointments of senior officers have been suspended, and because several top generals are expected to resign, following Khalevi’s steps.
