The Israeli government condemned today (May 20, 2025) what it described as ‘external pressures’ following the UK’s announcement that it has suspended bilateral negotiations for a free trade agreement with the Netanyahu government due to the situation in Gaza. The UK called the Israeli ambassador to the Foreign Office for explanations and announced new sanctions against Israelis settled in areas of the West Bank. In response, Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, ‘External pressures will not deter Israel from its path to defend its existence and security against enemies seeking its destruction.’ The Israeli ministry further remarked, ‘If, because of anti-Israel persistence and internal political considerations, the British government is willing to harm the British economy, that is their right.’ Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary Lam told the House of Commons, ‘We cannot remain idle in the face of this new escalation. It is incompatible with the principles underpinning our bilateral relationship.’ He added, ‘Frankly, it offends the values of the British people. Therefore, today, I announce that we have suspended talks with this Israeli government for a new free trade agreement.’
