His foreign ministry spokesman said today (21.10.2024) Tehran sent a letter to the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to protest its threats to its nuclear facilities. Following Iran’s attack with nearly 200 ballistic missiles against Israel on 1 October 2024, Tehran fears retaliation that could, among other things, target nuclear power plants. “ Threats to attack nuclear installations contradict UN resolutions (…) and are condemned (…) We sent a letter about this to the UN agency responsible for nuclear surveillance,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Bagaei said at a press conference broadcast by Iranian television. Majid Asgaripour/WANA (West Asia News Agency) via REUTERS Last week, the office of Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel would listen to its main ally, the US, regarding the response it will give to Iran’s missile attack, but will take decisions on its actions based on its own national interest. This statement was attached to an article by the American newspaper Washington Post, according to which Netanyahu told the government Biden that Israel will hit military targets in Iran, not nuclear or oil installations. Answering a question about the possibility of Iran changing its official nuclear doctrine, Bhagaei said that “the weapons of mass destruction have no place in our policy.” Tehran will decide how and when to respond to any Israeli attack, according to him. Majid Asgaripour/WANA (West Asia News Agency) via REUTERS Iran has repeatedly denied Western accusations of secretly seeking the development of nuclear weapons by violating its commitment to the Global Non-Proliferation Treaty. Bhagaei also noted in separate statements he made that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Aragci will be going to Bahrain and Kuwait today as part of Iran’s efforts to ease regional tensions. Iran recently stepped up its diplomatic efforts with a series of visits by its foreign minister to the region to promote a ceasefire in Lebanon and Gaza. “ We are pleased that all countries in the region, like us, have reached the level of maturity at which the protection of peace in the region is a common duty, ” noted Bagayy referring to these visits. Majid Asgaripour/WANA (West Asia News Agency) via REUTERS Tehran rejects accusations of involvement in Lebanon The representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry also today rejected the accusations of Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati for Iran’s involvement in his country’s internal affairs, following statements attributed to the President of the Iranian Parliament. “Iran never intended to be involved in the internal affairs of Lebanon and has never acted in this way,” Bagaei noted. “We have talks with all countries that have an initiative to put an end to crimes and the attack on Lebanon, as well as to the genocide in Gaza,” he added, speaking of ‘misconception’ as regards the statements attributed to the President of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad-Bayger Galibaf. He stated in an article published on Thursday (17.10.2024) by the newspaper Le Figaro that Tehran was ready to negotiate a truce with Paris in Lebanon.
