The Strait of Hormuz is once again on high alert after Iran attacked a Cyprus-flagged commercial vessel, prompting a swift U.S. military response. A tense maritime standoff has unfolded in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes, with one crew member now missing following the assault.
Attack on M/V GFS Galaxy
The Cyprus-flagged container ship M/V GFS Galaxy sustained severe damage and caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz, forcing its crew to abandon ship. According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO)—a branch of the UK Ministry of Defence—the vessel was struck while sailing approximately nine nautical miles east of Oman’s Musandam Peninsula. UKMTO confirmed that the crew evacuated safely into a lifeboat.
The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) attributed the attack to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), stating it was an ‘unprovoked’ act against a civilian cargo vessel. CENTCOM reported that one crew member remains unaccounted for and that the ship is no longer seaworthy due to extensive engine room damage and the fire.
U.S. Retaliatory Strikes
In response, U.S. forces launched a new wave of airstrikes targeting sites in Sirik, Bandar Abbas, and Minab—key Iranian locations along the Gulf coast. Air defense systems were also activated in Tehran. The strikes follow CENTCOM’s declaration that the IRGC’s actions violated international norms and endangered global maritime security.
Iran’s Justification and Escalation
Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency claimed the ship was hit by a cruise missile and alleged the vessel ignored repeated warnings from Iranian authorities. Tehran maintains the GFS Galaxy violated navigation rules and insists the Strait of Hormuz remains closed indefinitely. Iranian officials have warned of harsh consequences for any further foreign military activity in the area.
New Attacks Reported
Later the same day, the IRGC announced it had disabled a second vessel in the strait and launched ballistic missiles at the U.S. Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. According to the IRGC, the strikes destroyed the base’s fighter jet maintenance center and command-and-control facilities. The group also claimed its aerospace forces carried out heavy attacks on U.S. support and refueling platforms in the region.
