Intense Disagreements Within Mitsotakis’ Government Over Pay Raises and Leadership

Voices from Kyriakos Mitsotakis reached Athens from Israel when he learned that Minister of Shipping Vasilis Kikilias proposed, following the raises announced by Defense Minister Nikos Dendias for the army, navy, and air force, to implement similar increases for police officers, firefighters, and port authorities because “there are no second or third-class uniformed personnel.” Before the prime minister could calm things down, Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis also chimed in, preemptively stating that “the government led by @kmitsotakis respects all those who wear the national emblem. It is certain that after necessary raises for the Armed Forces, financial room will be found to immediately follow with raises for ELAS members, the Port Authority, and the Fire Service.” The chorus grew louder as former Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos added on Saturday night: “The same (raises) must happen for the Greek Police, the Port Authority, and the Fire Department. Their services are vital to societal safety, and their responsibilities should reflect in their compensation.” Many New Democracy MPs, including Thanasis Pleuris and Notis Mitarakis, voiced their support. However, tensions within the party indicate a struggle for influence and future leadership roles. Mitsotakis returned last night and will address the issue today, aiming to quell unrest ahead of upcoming elections. Meanwhile, dissatisfaction brews not only within New Democracy but also among opposition parties like PASOK and SYRIZA, where internal conflicts and resignations signal brewing changes.
