During the first 11 months of 2015, the Netherlands has welcomed a record number for the country 54.000 refugees who are fleeing the war and the lack of stability in their countries in the Middle East and Africa.
As Europe faces its biggest refugee crisis in history since the end of World War ii, public opinion in the Netherlands appears deeply divided on the issue of the way in which needs to be addressed and the management of exodus, and tensions are caused regularly.
At the beginning of the month, the police had fired warning shots in the air to stop the riots that had broken out in the village Γκέλντερμαλσεν, in the central part of the country, after the announcement of the plan for the opening of a centre for the reception of 1,500 refugees.
In his message for Christmas, the king of the Netherlands William Alexander called for solidarity and urged the Dutch not to yield to the fear of the future.
“Of course we want to protect that which is expensive. We cannot avoid nor deny the feeling of fear. But we cannot allow fear to define our lives and dominate in our society,” he warned.
The Dutch should not “get in their shells”, but to face together, with courage and dignity, and to show solidarity to those who really need the help (them)”, he also underlined the Dutch king.
